Ex Machina is an architectural installation designed by Nicholas Di Donato (David Di Donato’s Brother,) and is an exploration of creating adaptive spaces which change functionality based upon biometric data gathered from the occupants. The control circuitry for this process was designed by David Di Donato, and is capable of driving 3 linear actuators and a network of DMX lights, as well as communicating with computer via USB. ECG and heart rate data is gathered using NeuroSky brand headsets and relayed to a central computer, where a custom program determines what space would be optimal for the user’s stress levels. This data is then relayed to the control circuitry, which adjusts the lighting and dimensions of the space.
